Wake up in Italy, hop on a ferry, ride through Slovenia and go to sleep in Croatia! Possibly our favourite start to any of our trips.
On this new trip, we’ll be exploring the gravel trails of beautiful Istria, the crown jewel of northern Croatia. The shimmering waters of the Adriatic Sea will be a regular sight, as we weave south from the hills down to the southern tip at Pula. First we’ll have two borders to cross, getting a glimpse of Italy and Slovenia before we make our home in Croatia for most of the trip.
With days of around 55km, luggage transfer available, comfortable accommodation, and free time in some of Croatia’s most vibrant coastal towns, we’ve designed this trip with holiday vibes in mind. Keen for more miles? Most days we have optional extra gravel loops.
Highlights
✔ Three countries on one trip! Italy, Slovenia & Croatia
✔ Enjoy some of Croatia’s most beautiful seaside towns - Porec, Rovinj and Pula
✔ A taste of Italy in Trieste, gelato and espresso galore

We’re back to two riding options today, with a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED chance to squeeze in a white water rafting trip on the iconic Soča River before our ride, or to take an easy morning relaxing in Bovec. Our shorter route will set off after lunch, following the river for much of the day, following gravel tracks and skirting the villages of scenic Bovec and Kobarid. The mountains and river always feel close by. Our destination tonight is a lovely small hostel in the town of Tolmin, a fun place to go hit up a local bar and celebrate your ride!
If you’re still craving climbs and enjoy some technical descending, our longer route will take you through the hills up to the wild feeling Mt Stol, for an epic gravel descent.

Today we head to the iconic Lake Bohinj! There’s a lot of miles and climbing ahead, but with the chance to hop on a local train to cut out distance and climbing, there’s options for everyone, and hell of a downhill reward!
Our hostel tonight is right on the lake - there’s no better location or view from our dining room. From bed to lake time in under 2 minutes? Winner.
Breakfast: Included
Route Option: Today is mostly tarmac, with some fun gravel and cycle path sections. Ride all the way 72km/2200m climbing. But there are options to skip distance by taking a local train today, or skip elevation with a more direct road route. See how you feel!

We pack up for the final time and head back to our starting hostel in Lesce, with plenty of miles in our legs and stories to tell. The shorter ride is stunning, using a brand new cycle path that follows the river most of the way to Lake Bled. Our long route will take us high into the Potluca plains on a beautiful gravel climb. The scenery opens up as we ride through shepherds villages that feel centuries old. It’s a fun descent back down to Lake Bled, where we join with the shorter route for a last swim and ride back to the hostel.
Back at the hostel, we’ll have time to relax and pack up bikes before a final dinner together at a local restaurant. Hoorah! We made it.

Accommodation & Food
Accommodation
We've prioritised comfort and holiday vibes on this trip, along with staying in some of Istria’s most popular, vibrant and scenic towns. All of our accommodation is 3* or 4*, on a twin room basis, and with single supplements available if you prefer your own room.
Food
Breakfast is included everyday, as are half of our dinners. On the other nights, we’ll either book a table at a local place we love, or share some recommendations. Lunches are not included, but we’ll make sure you the best places to eat (and perhaps sample the local wine!) on our rides.
Breakfast will be a simple but filling continental affair, with muesli, yoghurt, fruit, and bread, and eggs.
Gluten free and vegan produce is quite readily available in restaurants and supermarkets.
Our routes on this trip are about 50% gravel, with our core daily ride averaging around 55km a day and 600m of climbing. Many days will feature an additional additional self-navigated loop from our end point for those craving extra miles.
About the riding
Challenge Level
Terrain
This is a mixed terrain route, with about half of our time spent on off-road surfaces. Most of the gravel we’ll ride on this trip will be double track gravel roads or special cycle ways, that are generally in pretty well graded, with some shorter sections that may feature looser or rockier. In between we’ll ride quiet tarmac roads and cycle paths. Expect a bit more of steeper/more technical riding on some of the optional extra loops. As with all of our trips, we expect a mix of rider experiences to join us, and we fully embrace walking any parts of the route that feel a little out of your comfort zone!
Climbing
Whilst it’s certainly not flat, the daily elevations on this trip are much less than on many of our trips, ranging between 800m (in the hills of the first two days) and 200m (on our coastal days). The riding can be exposed though, so hills may feel like more work if we have hot and sunny days!
See our daily itinerary for daily statistics.
Daily Distances
Our core daily rides will range between 50 and 60km, with the option to add an extra 20 - 30km loop ride on to the end of most of days.
Remoteness & Weather
This trip is about soaking opportunities to relax as well as riding, and enjoy the cafe culture of the region will be part of the fun! Whilst we’ll spend lots of time submerged in the gorgeous Istrian countryside and away from civilisation, villages and supply stops are frequent, and the route is mostly accessible by our support vehicle in case if issues.
We expect dry and sunny weather, and depending on the forecast heat can be a consideration. However, with many of the days providing coastal access, we can grab the opportunity to cool off in the sea!
Support style
Our SITW Bikepacking trips aim to strike the perfect balance of freedom and support. Riders are free to ride the routes at their own pace or with the guide and group. Regardless, our team will be out on the routes to support and cheerlead.
Guiding
Either one or two SITW guides (depending on group size) will be out riding the route, moving back and forth between the group, or one riding towards the front and one towards the back. Riders will be equipped with their own navigation (which can be lent from us if needed!) and free to ride at their own pace. Each participant will be provided with a specially curated collection of routes and route briefings via Komoot, to enable self supported navigation.
Support
In addition to the bike based guides, this trip has a support vehicle driven by one of our guide team to assist the group in case of issues (mechanicals, injury etc). Whilst this vehicle should not be viewed as a shuttle option, it’s there to help whenever and however we need it. Our team know the public transport options in the area well, and can advise when it’s possible to take shorter options. Our SITW guide team will likely switch between bikes and vehicle over the course of the trip
Bikes & bike hire
Bike hire is not included as standard in this trip, and riders are welcome to bring their own bike or hire locally. There’ll be space to rebuild the bikes at our starting hotel, and we can arrange storage of bike boxes whilst on the trip, and have them delivered to meet us at the end of our ride in Pula.
Recommended bike
A gravel bike with minimum 38mm tyres, and a good amount of grip, or a hardtail MTB are both good choices for this trip. If you are newer to off-road riding, a hardtail can be a great option for building confidence on the off-road sections, though may feel slower on the tarmac sections.
Bike hire
We have partnered with Fiore Adventures in Croatia to provide bike hire. This can be booked through us as an Add-On to your trip, and the bike will be delivered to our hotel in time for the start of our ride in Trieste, and collected from the end of our trip in Pula.
They offer:
Hardtail Mountain Bikes (Giant Talon) - £180
Gravel Bikes (Giant Revol 0/1 or similar with 38mm tyres and 2 x11 gearing) - £250
Travelling with your bike
Check your airlines bike carriage policy for weight and size restrictions. Some airlines will allow them as part of their checked in baggage allowance (e.g. British Airways), but most require a bike to be added as a specific piece of Sports Luggage (easyjet, ryanair, wizzair, Jet2 etc), but often you get a higher weight allowance. This usually costs in the region of £40 - £60.
Your bike box/bag can be stored whilst on the trip, and we’ll arrange for it to meet us at the end
What spares and tools to bring
2 x spare tubes and patches
Small pump
Tubeless plugs/spare sealant if running tubeless tyres
Multitool with what you need for your bike e.g. allen keys
Spare set of brake pads (specific for your bike)
We also recommend bringing a few spares that are specific to your bike. We don’t expect you to know how to fit these! But having them to hand can mean our team or local bike shop is better able to get you back on the road.
Chain quick link
Spare derailleur hanger
Extra brake pads just in case!
FAQs
-
Please do not book your flights until we have confirmed the minimum trip number has been reached.
We recommend flying into Trieste airport (Italy) and home from Pula (Croatia). Both airports are well served by regional flights from the UK and Europe.
Other useful airports include Rijeka, (Croatia) and Ljubliana (Slovenia), whose cities will be connected to both Trieste and Pula by Flixbus, with a journey time of 2 - 2.5 hours.
-
Trieste Airport is 40km north of the city, but is well connected to the by train, and bus for around 5 Euro. Train operators have different rules on large luggage and bike bags, but generally there isn’t an issue with a typical bike bag. Taxis are also available, but can be expensive (around 80 - 100 euros) for the 30 mile journey.
-
Our start hotel is close to Trieste train station, which is well connected to trains from other countries. Rules for bike carraige can be found on the Tren Italia Website:
https://www.trenitalia.com/en/services/travelling_with_yourbike.html
Pula does not have a train station, but there are buses around 4 times a day back to Trieste. Bikes in bags can usually be booked as an extra piece of XL luggage.
-
You can secure your spot by paying a £300 deposit, which is refundable up to the point that we confirm the trip minimum numbers have been met. Once the trip is confirmed, the deposit is not refundable. The remaining balance is due 60 days before the trip by bank transfer. Cancellation between 60 days and 28 days, you’ll get 50% back. Cancellation within 28 days is non-refundable, but you can transfer your booking to another person should you find one. View the full booking terms and conditions here.
We highly recommend taking out travel insurance at the point of booking to cover in case of cancellation or curtailment.
-
We’ll have a max group size of 18, minimum group size of 8 to run.
-
We will try our best to accommodate dietary restrictions for meals that we prepare, and will pass on to any places that we eat on the trip.
If you have serious allergies, please email us before booking on hello@sistersinthewild.com.
-
Travel insurance is compulsory on all of our trips. Your insurance must include adequate protection for overseas medical treatment, evacuation or repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities (for example, multi day off-road cycling) involved on your SITW trip. We highly recommend that you book travel insurance as soon as you book your trip. We also highly recommend taking out a policy which also includes personal liability, cancellation and cover in the event you are unable to join your trip due to illness or injury, curtailment, loss of luggage or personal effects, or for any other reason.
E.g. with Yellow Jersey, Bikmo, Laka

In order to make the most of the riding on offer, we’d suggest that you are comfortable riding 30+ miles in a day in reasonably hilly terrain, for a few days on the run. Riding a loaded bike takes a little more effort, so if you’re planning to carry your own lugagge, we’d recommend trying some practice rides of 30 miles + with some weight/luggage on your bike.
There is no pressure to ride fast! Days are long, and you are free to start as early as you want. A little bit of prior experience of riding off road is recommended.
Feel free to drop us an email hello@sistersinthewild.com if you have any questions on this.
-
Yes, you can book directly with our starting/ending hotel if you wish to stay earlier/later . We’ll share info on where we’ll be staying in Trieste and Pula as soon as we can.
If you need to arrive late, that’s also fine, though ideally we’d have you join in time for the rider briefing on the evening of day 1, but we can fill you in.
-
Summers in Croatia tend to be hot, with slightly cooler temperatures in the shoulder months of June & September. Our previous trips to the region at this time of year have seen temperatures mostly in the mid-20’s. Of course, there is always a chance of hotter and cooler temperatures and rain, soe suggest packing for all weathers just in case! We’ll share a detailed packing list in our trip guide.
-
We’’ll share a detailed packing list as part of the Trip Joining Info, but you’ll need
Your bike, spares & basic tools, helmet, navigation device, and lock
Bikepacking bags (or add luggage transfer!). Bags can be loaned from us.
Clothes to ride in, rain or shine
Off the bike clothes
Beach time kit
Personal items
-
We have a library of navigation devices we can loan you for the weekend. These can be added to your booking through the normal ticket process.
-
Bikepacking bags can be loaned from us, and added to your booking for a small fee. Book through the normal ticket process, and we’ll match them to your order.
-
We recommend checking out the country-specific information
-
Slovenia is in the EU Shengen zone, and most travellers do not require a visa. Please check the specific requirements for your country.
-
Travelling to Croatia is considered to be fairly safe. While there are still laws that victimise members of this community (largely due to the country's more catholic ideologies), LGBTQIA+ rights have come a long way with many bills also being passed to protect members against harm, abuse, and discrimination in recent years. These bills include the Same-sex Life Partnership Act (enabling same-sex couples to officially recognise their relationship before the law), the Gender Equality Act, the Anti-Discrimination Act, and the Media Act (prohibiting any program media from encouraging or glorifying inequality based on sexual orientation).
On a more social level, acceptance and support for the community have also strengthened with public displays of affection between same-sex couples no longer frowned upon in larger, metropolitan cities such as Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, and Rijeka. However, if you're travelling to lesser populated cities or more rural and conservative areas of the country, the same public displays of affection may be met with hostility.
-
Bike boxes/bags can be left at the start of the trip, and we will meet them again at the end.
