Our off-road Albanian adventure will see us exploring the high mountains of central Albania, away from the tourist trail, on a route especially designed in collaboration local mountain bike experts
Carrying what we need for the week on our bikes (or just the essentials if you add a luggage transfer!), we’ll visit traditional villages nestled in the mountains, experience beautiful Albanian hospitality, and ride beautiful remote trails and tracks in the mountainous landscapes.
Beginning and ending in the capital Tirana, we’ll head straight into the hills, and hop between comfortable hotels and traditional local guesthouses as we head deeper into the wild. A highlight of our trip will be eating with and staying with local families, friends of our partners in Albania who are helping us to develop this trip. With our bi-lingual local support guide, we’ll get a unique insight into modern and traditional ways of life, and a chance to share stories with the matriachs of many households!
This is one of our WILDER trips - aimed at riders who relish wild landscapes, chunky off-road riding, big miles and big climbs. Check in to our comfortable hotel in the city is available from 3pm, with time to rebuild any bikes before a welcome briefing and dinner together in the city.

Dinner: Included
Accommodation: HotelWe get on our bikes and start directly from the edge of the capital city Tirana. The scenery changes impressively quickly as we move from the city suburbs, into gentle hills, green meadows, by small lakes and sleepy villages.
Our destination for today is the historical important city of Kruja, birth place of Albania’s national hero, located spectacularly in the mountains. It’ll be hard to believe we started the day in the country’s capital!
We sleep and eat in the best hotel of the area, with good food, comfort and a great view.

Breakfast: Included
Lunch: Included
Dinner: Included
Accommodation: Small hotelToday we climb from Kruja on a spectacular and nearly traffic-free asphalt road into the mountains. The highest point of the day is the “Shtame”-pass, in the middle of pine trees and part of a national park. Here begins the natural world of central Albania, far from the beaten path, with even more tradition and the literal hospitality. A 20km long downhill over wild natural roads, built a hundred years ago by the Italians and today what nature has left, brings us down to the small city of Burrel and the river Mat.
For the last section of the day you have the choice between a gentle roll-out or an extra 15km with some great dirt trails riding - and even some singletrack!
We sleep & eat in a small family-run hotel in the regional town of Burrel.

Dinner: Included
Accommodation: Small hotelA big day of climbing, as we ascend into mountain area between the regions of Mat and Diber. Soon after we feel like we are stepping back in time, as we bike over earthy natural roads into a high plateau, past old houses built of stone, and horses pulling ploughs. Cars are a rare sight, but smiling and welcoming faces are many.
A long exhilarating downhill brings us to the river Drin, where we continue with a stretch of tarmac riding to Peshkopi, a small regional city and our final destination for today.
We sleep again in the best hotel of the town, newly renovated and with modern comfort.

Accommodation: GuesthouseAfter three big days of riding, today you have the choice to take a more relaxing day, to take a beautiful hike, or to ride a longer scenic ride to our next accommodation, a few miles on from Peshkopi
We’ll have time to explore the lively town in the morning with a stroll in the morning, and move on to the village of Rabdisht, where we stay in a beautiful traditional guesthouse for dinner and the night. Rabdisht is one of Albanias most traditional villages, with houses built mainly from stone.
There’ll be options for how you want to spend your day, with multiple riding and hiking length options depending on your legs! Or plenty of chance to relax at our beautiful home for the night.

Accommodation: GuesthouseCherry trees welcome us on the first stretch of the day, which takes us over asphalt away from Peshkopi and down to the river Drin. Here a dirt road starts and we bike into a remote mountain valley. The trail takes us along one of the most authentic villages of Albania, with fences woven from branches, cattle in the alleys, and local youngsters rather perplexed by us bikers.
The highest point of our trip will be rewarded once we complete a little hike a bike, along a (non-technical) walking trail. Finally, our downhill will take us past alpine huts high in the hills as we arrive one of our most memorable accommodations of the week.
We are guests at the Hupi-family in their centuries old defense-tower, which over the past few years was renovated into a stunning guesthouse full of details and history. We’ll be welcomed with authentic Albanian hospitality and the delicious homemade food, our reward for another big day.

Accomodation & Food
Accommodation
This trip will predominantly feature comfortable hotels (5 nights), on a twin room basis. On two nights, we will be hosted in a traditional family guesthouse, which only have dorm rooms available. These are some of the highlights of the trip, simple accommodations that put us right into the most scenic and unique locations.
A single supplement is available on our 5 nights in hotels.
This is a bikepacking trip, with riders carrying their own stuff between hotels. If you prefer, luggage transfer can be added to your booking for £100.
Food
Food in Albania is quite varied thanks to the many influences on the country and particularly Mediterranean combining Turkish, Greek and Italian tastes.
Under the leadership of Enver Hoxha (the communist leader of Albania from 1944 to 1985), Albania became a self-sustaining country due to its isolation to the world. However, owing to the fertile valleys, fresh mountain springs and Mediterranean climate, they are still very much a subsistence culture and show very few signs of changing. In the countryside, expect your food to have been grown not too far from your plate.
Breakfasts are typically eggs, fresh bread, jam, honey, and coffee or tea. For lunch and dinner, meat dishes are often goat or lamb, while fish dishes might include trout or whitebait. Vegetarian options are available on our trip too, as are vegan options, though dairy products, especially milk and yoghurt, are present in almost every meal. As such, vegan options may be limited in some of our smaller destinations. Courses often come in meze form, complemented by a variety of vegetables, salad, freshly baked bread, homemade cheeses, local wines and rakija.
About the riding
Challenge Level
We’ve rated this trip as a 4/5 on challenge level. This trip is apart of our WILDER series - bikepacking trips in wild landscapes that go that little bit further. Longer days, bigger climbs, more thrilling descents, wilder terrain, more solitutde, and even more memories to be made. With multiple days of 70+km, 60% off-road terrain, and a mix off all types of trails, this a trip well suited to experienced gravel riders who love long days in the saddle and some embrace some chunkier gravel terrain.
As an off-road adventure in a remote region of a developing country, it’s nearly certain that not everything will go 100% according to the plan! So a willingness to embrace the spirit of the unknown and adventure is important for this trip. What we get in return are real cultural interactions, and friendly locals eager to help solve any problems!
Terrain
The riding on this trip is around 60% off-road. Our off-road riding will be predominantly on double track trails, of mixed quality, with some single-track trails in sections. We’ll have plenty of stretches of well maintained forest gravel roads, but also some trails that can be steep and looser/rougher in places. There are some long and occasionally steep downhill stretches, that may vary in quality in places (e.g. washed out, rockier) and require confidence in descending on off-road terrain.
On some days, the tracks will be more technical, with features such as washed out channels, larger rubble and rocks , or clay. Whilst the area is relatively rocky, periods of rain can cause some parts of the tracks to become , and some bits of walking your bike may be needed. Overall, the route is 98% rideable by confident off-road riders.
Amongst the off-road sections, we’ll also have some smooth tarmac riding, where we’ll enjoy a chance to make some quick miles or elevation gain! There will be several long tarmac climbs.
Climbing
Climbing is a significant contributor to this trip’s challenge level, with most days featuring an elevation gain of around 1500m . Our days of significant climbing tend to be one or two big climbs, with some undulating around it. Around half of our big climbs are on tarmac, and half are off-road terrain. They tend to have decent gradients, though there are some steeper sections.
Most of our big descents are off-road, and require confidence and skill in off-road descending.
Daily Distances
Most of our daily distances are between 60 and 70km, with shorter milages on our first and last day of riding. Komoot suggests an average moving time per day of around 7 hours in the saddle.
Remoteness & Weather
This is one of our more remote and wild trips, with lots of riding in areas that do not have many shelter options. Riders should be comfortable with long days outside, whatever the weather! Our guide team will monitor the weather and make route adjustments as needed.
Most of the route is accessible by our support vehicle, though we have one day where the first half of the route is on single trails in the mountains, which is not accessible by vehicles. We plan to ride as amore cohesive group on this day. Most days have at least one place to stop for a cafe or shop, but shelter outside of these regroup stops can be limited.
Riders should be aware that Albania is still one of the poorest and least “developed” countries of Europe. Usual Western European standards are not always there, be it in service, infrastructure, or in the availability of emergency services. . It’s nearly certain that not everything will go 100% according to the plan, so a willingness to embrace the spirit of the unknown and adventure is important for this trip.
Support style
Our SITW Bikepacking trips aim to strike the perfect balance of freedom and support. Riders are free to ride the routes at their own pace or with the guide and group. We will set regroup points along the route, with our lunch spot and any snack spots being our main regroup of the day.
Guiding
There will be two SITW guides out on the bike, moving back and forth amongst the group, generally with one towards the front and one towards the back of the group. Our guides are qualified first aiders and experienced mechanics and can help troubleshoot issues on the trail. Riders should equipped with their own navigation and not rely on following a guide for directions. Each participant will be provided with a specially curated collection of routes and route briefings via Komoot, to enable self supported navigation.
Support
In addition to the bike based guides, this trip has a local driver (who could be male) in a 4 x 4 support vehicle to assist the group in case of issues (mechanicals, injury etc). This should not not be viewed as a daily shuttle option, and the vehicle will not be able to access all parts of our route. They will meet us at key points along the route to check in and make sure we have what we need, and provide assistance and rider shuttles where needed.
Bikes & bike hire
Bike hire is not included as standard in this trip, and riders are welcome to bring their own bike or hire locally. There’'ll be space to rebuild the bikes at our starting hostel, and we arrange storage of bike boxes whilst on the trip, and delivery to the end of our trip.
Recommended bike
We would recommend a hardtail MTB as the ideal bike for this trip, or a full suspension bike that can carry bikepacking bags. A thick tyre gravel bike is an option ONLY if you are very experienced riding chunkier off-road terrain with it, including steep and loose descents. This should have a good gearing range, and minimum of 50mm tyres. Road bikes and gravel bikes with skinnier tyres not suitable for this trip.
Bike hire
Bike hire is available through our local partners, who have a limited number of hardtail or full suspension MTB’s available to rent. You can add this to your trip at booking, and we’ll arrange for the bikes to be delivered and collected from our start point.
Travelling with your bike
Check your airlines bike carriage policy for weight and size restrictions. Some airlines will allow them as part of their checked in baggage allowance (e.g. British Airways), but most require a bike to be added as a specific piece of Sports Luggage (easyjet, ryanair, wizzair, Jet2 etc) , but often you get a higher weight allowance. Usually costs in the region of £40 -£60.
Your bike box/bag can be stored whilst on the trip.
What spares and tools to bring
2 x spare tubes and patches
Small pump
Tubeless plugs/spare sealant if running tubeless tyres
Multitool with what you need for your bike e.g. allen keys
Spare set of brake pads (specific for your bike)
We also recommend bringing a few spares that are specific to your bike. We don’t expect you to know how to fit these! But having them to hand can mean our team or local bike shop is better able to get you back on the road.
Chain quick link
Spare derailleur hanger
Extra brake pads

Our cycling trip starts and ends in Tirana, whose airport is a 30 min taxi ride from the centre.
Tirana is well served by budget airlines across Europe. In the UK, currently Ryanair fly from Bristol, Manchester, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. Multiple airlines fly from London.
Please do not book your travel until we have confirmed the minimum trip number has been met.
-
Albania doesn’t have any international railway lines, but is served by long distance buses. Zagreb in Croatia is the closest train station, from which a series of international buses via Bosnia/Croatia and Montengro is possible (but certainly not quick).
Alternatively, a ferry runs from Bari in Italy to the Albanian coast, where buses/ride can be picked up.

In order to make the most of the riding on offer, we’d suggest that you are comfortable riding 30+ miles in a day in hilly terrain, for a few days on the run. Riding a loaded bike for multiple days on the run takes a little more effort, so we’d recommend trying a couple of bigger practice rides of 45 miles + with some weight/luggage on your bike.
Feel free to drop us an email hello@sistersinthewild.com if you have any questions on this.
-
Yes, you can book directly with our starting/ending hotel if you wish to stay earlier/late. We’ll share our hotel info once the trip is confirmed.
If you need to arrive late on day 1, that’s also fine, and our first nights dinner can be skipped. We can fill you in on our rider briefing.
If you wish to stay longer after our trip, that’s a great shout. You can head to the coast by bus or taxi in a couple of hours.
-
Check your airlines or train/busbike carriage policy.
Most airlines require a bike to be added as a specific piece of Sports Luggage, but often you get a higher weight allowance. Usually costs in the region of £40 - 50.
Train/bus rules are dependent on carrier with some requiring bikes to be packed or pre-booked. Please check the specific rules for the service.

Albania has a temperate, Mediterranean climate. The first day of spring is 15 March and things really start to hot up toward the end of the month when clear skies and balmy temperatures provide a nice way to ease into the heat of summer. Summer brings sunshine and maximum temperatures between 20C and 35C (68F and 95F), but increasingly hotter with days sometimes above 40C. September and October see a return to cooler temperatures, but tend to still see lots of sunny blue skies.
