Intro to Bikepacking - what to expect

Our Intro to Bikepacking weekends are at the heart of what we do. Sisters in the Wild was born from a love of bikepacking and enabling more people to experience that simple joy makes our world (and wheels) go round. If you are bikepacking curious and don’t know where to start, or you’re still a bit new to it and want to learn even more tips and tricks for future adventures, these weekends are for you. We currently offer these trips in our home of the Lake District, the magical Peak District and the iconic South Downs, all well-known bikepacking destinations.

Still hovering over that ‘Book Now’ button, here’s a taster of what happens on our Intro to Bikepacking Weekends

Before We Begin

We know that even before the event, things can be nerve-wracking. That’s why we have a dedicated WhatsApp chat for each weekend. They tend to buzz with activity before and after your adventure. As well as chatting to people who you’ll be riding with before you meet, it’s also a space for planning your next rides and staying connected with the wonderful people you meet.

A Friendly Start

Our adventure usually begins at a YHA location, chosen for its ease of access and amenities. We like to start these weekends with a good base for you to meet each other, share a meal and get ready for some packing faff! If you don't have a bike to ride, we make sure bike hire options are available locally. We have you covered for bike bags as well with the Sisters in the Wild bags which you can book when you buy your ticket!

Once everyone has arrived we gather in the evening for dinner together. It's a chance to get to know your fellow adventurers, share your stories, experiences and what you're looking forward to the most.

The Art of Packing Light

Ever heard of "Rach's Ruthless Packing List"? After dinner you're going to! We dive into a kit demo that shows you exactly what you need (and what you don't) for a seamless bikepacking experience. From gear hacks to making the most of what you already own, we'll share all our best tips to get you started. And if you are feeling uncertain? Pack everything! We'll have a morning session dedicated to culling, ensuring you carry only what's necessary. After this essential knowledge session we’ll head to bed to get a good night’s sleep.

Breakfast, Bikes and Beyond

After a hearty breakfast, we'll chat about bags, camping gear and the best setups for both hardtail and drop bar bikes. Then, it’s time for the "packing faff" – time dedicated to making those final packing decisions with plenty of help to get your bags securely on your bikes. For those borrowing bags, you’ll have a demo on getting them on and off your bikes so there will be no mysteries when we get rolling.

The Journey Unfolds

For the Intro to Bikepacking Weekends we ride as a group with no one left behind. We’ll head out together, usually on a 20-mile journey, to our campsite. The rides will be a challenge and the bags will make your bike feel a bit different, but everyone will be in the same boat. We’ll be stopping for snacks and making sure everyone has time to enjoy the views. If you’re new to off-road cycling then we recommend riding a mountain bike to make the most of the experience.

Once we reach our camp, first we put our tents up, trust us it’s better to get it done and then relax! The Sisters in the Wild crew will get a fire roaring, and maybe even put on a tarp workshop. As night falls, we’ll enjoy our expedition meals gathered around the fire sharing stories of the day and swapping tips about wild camping, route planning and more.

More Than Just a Ride

The next day starts with breakfast by the campfire, followed by a quicker pack-up (practice makes perfect, after all). Then, we're off to enjoy a second breakfast, this is a bikepacking essential! We’ll ride back to our starting point, the second day of riding always feels more relaxing once you’re used to the bags and all those day one strangers are now your friends. The ride will be a good test of your new bag packing skills and there will be lots of opportunities to stop, snack and give bags a quick once over.

Once we’re back to the start, we’ll start unpacking our bikes and you’ll be a newly accomplished bikepacker with tips and tricks galore.

That’s Not the End

Our Intro to Bikepacking Weekends are more than just a bikepacking trip; they’re an opportunity to connect, learn, and explore the great outdoors with a group that could be your future adventure pals.

So, join us on an adventure where the journey is as rewarding as the destination. Your bike packing story starts here, and we can't wait to welcome you to the Sisters in the Wild community!
