From Mountain Pastures to the Fjords, Norway's Most Beautiful Gravel Route Awaits

In Summer 2027, we'll be heading to Norway to ride two of the country's most iconic gravel routes — the Mjølkevegen and the Rallarvegen — staying in unique mountain lodges along the way.

Known as Norway's most scenic cycling routes, we've taken the best of both and woven them into our own version that hits every highlight. Expect boat cruises across mountain fjords, nights with glaciers on the doorstep, and over 340km of incredible gravel riding tying it all together.

There's no disguising it — Norway isn't cheap. So we've deliberately designed this trip to include as much as possible. From meeting you in Oslo to dropping you back 7 days later, all transfers, meals and activities in between are included. You just need a bike, snacks, and pocket money for brews (and maybe the odd waffle!).

Highlights

Combine the Mjølkevegen and Rallarvegen into one route

Endless gravel roads through big mountain scenery

✔ Experience unique mountain lodge culture in specially chosen accommodations ‍

✔ Wild swimming in fjords and rivers

Itinerary

Start Point: Oslo Airport
End Point: Oslo Airport

Starting from Oslo, we head into Jotunheimen National Park to begin the Mjølkevegen, riding through forest and lakeside gravel before climbing above the treeline into wide open mountain scenery. Along the way there's a boat ride across Bygdin lake, a detour over the stunning Sletterfjellet pass, and nights in traditional lodges and camps.

The second half of the trip picks up the Rallarvegen, Norway's most scenic bike ride, climbing to the week's high point at 1,345m before a long, thrilling descent through remote mountain terrain. We finish with a fjordside toast in Flåm, then one last quiet night in the hills before transferring back to Oslo — seven days, 340km of gravel, and some of Norway's most dramatic landscapes along the way.

Accommodation & Food

Accommodation

Sleeping in comfort — and sometimes real style — mostly in traditional Norwegian mountain lodges and hotels, on a twin-room basis.

Solo supplement is available for 5 of the 6 nights, though rooms may not always have a private bathroom.

One night (night 4) is spent in simple, traditional camping huts at Rogan Camping, shared by up to 4 riders, with a communal bathroom for the campsite. On this night, those with a solo supplement will be roomed with one other rider.

Food

All meals are included on this trip, and eaten at our accommodation — often a highlight of the day, coming together to share home-cooked food.

Breakfasts are buffet-style, with a range of cereals, breads, yoghurts, cheese and ham, and often eggs and other hot food.

In Norway, it's typical for lunch to be a build-your-own "lunch packet," taken from the breakfast buffet (with permission to raid it!). We'll take these each day and carry them on our bikes, often eating al fresco by the roadside — shelter and cafés are limited along the route.

Dinner is sometimes a set home-cooked 3–5 course meal, and one or two nights hosted by your Sisters in the Wild team.

Where possible, we'll stop at local cafés and lodges for coffee and local treats like cinnamon buns and waffles — these are optional and not included.

About The Riding

Challenge Level

Norway singletrack

We've rated this trip 3/5 on challenge — suitable for riders with some off-road experience and bike handling skills, comfortable climbing and covering hilly 50–60km days back to back.

Terrain

Around 80% gravel, 20% tarmac, this is one of our most gravel-focused trips. Most riding is on wide gravel roads (also used by vehicles) — some silky smooth, some looser and rockier — with some steep descents, so confidence handling a bike off-road matters here. There are also short, fun sections of muddier or rockier singletrack, and parts of the Rallarvegen may have washed-out sections that need care.

Climbing

Norway is famously hilly, and the challenge on some days comes from climbing and descending rather than distance. There are two consecutive big climbing days in the middle of the trip (1,000m+), plus a mix of rolling terrain and a couple of individual climbs around 600m.

Daily Distances

Core routes average 50–60km per day. For those craving extra miles, additional rides are mapped from most of our accommodations, along with some incredible hiking opportunities. Rides or hikes beyond our core routes are unguided.

Remoteness & Weather

Much of the route is accessible by vehicle, but there are long stretches without shelter or facilities, and lots of riding above 1,000m. Sometimes there's nothing at all until the next lodge. Norwegian weather is famously unpredictable — expect the possibility of sunshine and blue skies, or rain, cold and high winds. Pack properly for all conditions and be prepared for full days riding in the elements without shelter.

For most of the trip, our support van follows the same route. However, there's a 50km stretch of the Rallarvegen (Day 6) with no vehicle access — in this section, we'd rely on emergency services for any incidents.

Support Style

Our SITW Bikepacking trips aim to strike the perfect balance of freedom and support. Riders are free to ride the routes at their own pace or with the guide and group. Regardless, our team will be out on the routes to support and cheerlead.

Coffee stops in Norway

Guiding

One or two Sisters in the Wild guides on the bike (depending on group size), plus a support van and driver. Ride your own way — with the group, or ahead at your own pace, regrouping at key stops. All riders should carry their own navigation; devices are available to loan. We'll share a curated route collection and briefings via Komoot, and talk through each day's route over dinner.

Luggage is transferred daily on this trip, so you only need to carry your layers, lunch and snacks while riding.

Support

In addition to the bike based guides, this trip has a local driver (male) in a 4 x 4 support vehicle to assist the group in case of issues (mechanicals, injury etc). This should not not be viewed as a daily shuttle option, but will meet us at key points along the route to check in and make sure we have what we need, and provide assistance and rider shuttles where needed.

Bikes & Bike Hire

Bike hire is not included as standard — riders are welcome to bring their own bike or hire locally through us.

Gravel bikes in Norway

Recommended bike

A gravel bike with a minimum of 42mm tyres and a good gearing ratio is ideal for this trip. If you're newer to off-road riding, a hardtail mountain bike is great for building confidence on the rougher sections (though slightly slower on tarmac). Bring your bike in safe working order — we'll share a recommended spares and tools list ahead of the trip.

Bike Hire

We can arrange local bike hire. Simply add this as an add-on in your WeTrvael portal and we'll pass your details on to our trusted local provider (size and style subject to availability). You can read more about the hire bikes at Hike&Bike Jotuheimen.
