Seven days among the iconic Strade Bianche — gravel riding, feasting, and slow-living in the heart of Tuscany

This isn't just a gravel camp. It's a full immersion into one of the world's most beloved cycling landscapes — the rolling hills, dusty white roads, and unhurried rhythms of southern Tuscany.

Based at a beautiful agriturismo in the heart of the Strade Bianche (white roads), 30km south of Siena, you'll spend six days exploring the very gravel roads that make this region legendary. Each morning you choose your route — long or short — and each evening you return to exceptional local food, incredible experiences, and the kind of golden-hour views that make you feel genuinely lucky.

Fully supported, thoughtfully guided, and rich with Tuscan culture — from hands-on cooking classes to wine and olive oil tastings — this is SITW at its most elevated.

Itinerary

Location: Agriturismo near Asciano, Italty

Where the gravel roads meet la dolce vita

From our beautiful agriturismo basecamp in the heart of the Strade Bianche, we'll spend six days exploring the legendary gravel roads and rolling countryside of southern Tuscany on day-ride loops that showcase some of the finest off-road riding in Europe.

Each day, we'll provide two specially curated routes to choose from — a longer epic for those chasing distance and elevation, and a shorter route for those who want more time to savour the scenery (and save room for dinner). Choose to ride with a guided group, set your own pace, or head out with friends. Wherever and however you ride, you'll be moving through one of the world's most beloved landscapes — past cypress-lined ridges, medieval hilltop towns, and ancient farmhouses — before regrouping back at basecamp as the sun dips over the lavender fields.

Expect the usual Sisters in the Wild warmth at basecamp — but with a distinctly Tuscan twist. Communal dinners of exceptional local food, wine tastings, a hands-on cooking class, aperitivo in the golden hour, and long evenings spent sharing stories with good people. This week is as much about the table as it is the trail.

Accomodation & Food

Basecamp

Your home for the week is a stunning agriturismo set 30km south of Siena, in the very heart of the Strade Bianche. Surrounded by lavender fields and ancient olive groves, this is a place that rewards arriving tired from the saddle.

Our hosts are a wonderful brother and sister who are passionate about cycling, Tuscan food, and keeping local traditions alive. Rooms are spread across private apartments and comfortable en-suite rooms — all on a twin-share basis, with the option to upgrade to a single room. There's a pool, extraordinary sunsets, and the kind of deep quiet that's increasingly hard to find.

Rooms available from 3pm on arrival. Late arrivals always welcome — just join us when you can. Check-out is 10am on departure day. Extra nights can be arranged directly with the property subject to availability.

Food

Food is central to this week, and we haven't cut corners. Alongside your cooking class dinner and the four-course feasts on Days 3 and 6, you'll wake each morning to a proper breakfast and head out with a picnic lunch on every riding day.

On two evenings, dinner is yours to enjoy independently — a great opportunity to explore the local restaurants of Asciano or Siena, both worth the trip on their own merits. We'll arrange the shuttle and, where helpful, a recommendation or two.

Dietary requirements? Let us know at booking and we'll do our best to accommodate. Gluten-free pizza is available on arrival night.

About The Riding

With two route options each day, a longer and shorter route, we have given this trip a range of 3/5 (shorter route) to 4/5 (longer routes) for challenge level.

Riding the Strade Biache gravel roads

Challenge Level

Terrain

Around 50% gravel, 50% tarmac. The famous Strade Bianche — wide, compacted gravel roads — form the backbone of most routes. Linking sections include occasional singletrack, rougher farm tracks, and short tarmac stretches. After heavy rain, some sections may be rerouted or require brief walks — all part of the adventure.

Climbing

Tuscany is famously rolling rather than mountainous — there are few big climbs, but the terrain is relentlessly undulating. Expect elevation gains of 700–1000m on shorter routes and 1200–1500m on longer routes. Most gradients are manageable, though there will be some sharp, short ascents and descents. Confident off-road descending is recommended.

Daily Distances

Shorter routes: 40–50km per day.
Longer routes: 60–80km per day.

The support van is always available to hop in at set regroup points — so you're never committed to a distance you're not feeling.

Remoteness & Weather

We pass through villages and towns most days, and the support vehicle can reach the majority of the route. We run these camps in early and late summer — warm, sunny days, without the intense heat or storms of peak season. Always pack a rain layer just in case.

More than just the riding…

Tuscany has always been as much about the table as the road. We've woven a set of carefully chosen experiences through the week that go well beyond the saddle.

  • Wine tasting in Tuscany

    Wine Tasting

Local Chianti and Brunello country — tasted properly, with the people who make it.

  • Olive groves in Tuscany

    Olive Oil Tasting

Learn to taste and appreciate the liquid gold produced in the groves around our basecamp.

  • Aperitivo Hour Tuscany

    Aperitivo Hour

The Italian art of the early evening drink. Celebrated twice — because once is never enough.

  • Making pasta in Italy

    Cooking Class

A proper, hands-on lesson in Tuscan cooking. Then you eat what you made. Need we say more?

Support Style

Fully Supported, Entirely Flexible

This is a supported camp designed to let you ride your way. Whether you prefer a guided group, solo navigation, or something in between — it all works.

Guiding

There will be two ride options each day, with SITW guides out on each of the route options.   Each evening, we’ll talk over the routes for the next day, and set start times for those who want to ride with a guide/group.   If you choose to ride with a guided group, we'll be riding at a pace that suits that whole group.  We’ll have a whatsapp set up for regrouping at scenic picnic stops, cafes and sights along the way.

All riders should equipped with their own navigation, and navigation devices are available to loan from us, and  we’ll share a a specially curated collection of routes and route briefings via Komoot, to enable navigation and planning your days.

Support

This Gravel Camp is fully supported, with at least one SITW bike guide per 8 riders, and a support van capable of carrying bikes and riders.   Riders will be provided with a specially curated route collection, and are free to ride each day’s routes at their own pace or with the guided group. Or a mix of the two! Our gravel camps are all set up to enable all riders to ride their way.  We’ll share recommended regroup spot, our favourite cafes and sights along the way,

Bikes & Bike Hire

Bike hire is not included as standard — riders are welcome to bring their own bike or hire locally through us.

Recommended Bike

A gravel bike with a minimum of 38mm tyres and a good gearing ratio is ideal for this trip. If you're newer to off-road riding, a hardtail mountain bike is great for building confidence on the rougher sections (though slightly slower on tarmac). Bring your bike in safe working order — we'll share a recommended spares and tools list ahead of the trip.

Bike Hire

We can arrange local bike hire–either a gravel bike or hardtail mountain bike. Simply add this as an add-on in your WeTrvael portal and we'll pass your details on to our trusted local provider.
