Itinerary

Location: Agriturismo near Asciano, Italty

Where the gravel roads meet la dolce vita

From our beautiful agriturismo basecamp in the heart of the Strade Bianche, we'll spend six days exploring the legendary gravel roads and rolling countryside of southern Tuscany on day-ride loops that showcase some of the finest off-road riding in Europe.

Each day, we'll provide two specially curated routes to choose from — a longer epic for those chasing distance and elevation, and a shorter route for those who want more time to savour the scenery (and save room for dinner). Choose to ride with a guided group, set your own pace, or head out with friends. Wherever and however you ride, you'll be moving through one of the world's most beloved landscapes — past cypress-lined ridges, medieval hilltop towns, and ancient farmhouses — before regrouping back at basecamp as the sun dips over the lavender fields.

Expect the usual Sisters in the Wild warmth at basecamp — but with a distinctly Tuscan twist. Communal dinners of exceptional local food, wine tastings, a hands-on cooking class, aperitivo in the golden hour, and long evenings spent sharing stories with good people. This week is as much about the table as it is the trail.

  • Welcome to Tuscany

We pick you up from Florence Airport at 1:30pm, collecting those joining from Siena Train Station at approximately 3pm on the way through. Once at basecamp, there's time to build bikes and settle into the agriturismo before a gentle shakedown ride to loosen the legs and soak in the surroundings.

The evening begins with aperitivo al fresco — drinks in the golden hour — followed by homemade pizza straight from the on-site wood-fired oven (gluten-free options available). The perfect start.

🍕 Dinner: Homemade pizza, included🥂 Aperitivo included

  • Your first full day in the saddle takes you into the otherworldly landscape of the Crete Senesi — a hauntingly beautiful region of bare clay hills, solitary farmhouses, and cypress-lined ridges that look like a Renaissance painting come to life. The Strade Bianche are at their finest here.

Back at basecamp, the afternoon transforms into a hands-on cooking class with our hosts — learning the secrets of proper Tuscan cooking before sitting down to eat everything you've made together.

🧑‍🍳 Dinner: Cooking class — you eat what you cook!

    🧺 Picnic lunch included

  • A day of varied landscapes and rewarding climbs. Riders on the long route have the option to pause at the Rapolano Terme thermal baths — a geothermal pool halfway through the ride that makes for a rather extraordinary mid-ride rest stop. Those choosing the shorter route can head more directly back to basecamp for an early afternoon in the pool.

The evening brings a special four-course dinner prepared on-site using local seasonal produce.

    🍽 Dinner: 4-course dinner, included

    🧺 Picnic lunch included

♨️ Optional thermal baths (long route)

  • The Val d'Orcia is arguably Tuscany's most photographed landscape — and for good reason. Today's route ventures deep into this UNESCO-listed valley, past ancient hilltop towns, medieval abbeys, and the kind of sweeping views that stop you in your tracks. Expect the most demanding day of the week, rewarded accordingly.

Post-ride, a wine tasting and aperitivo awaits back at basecamp. Tonight's dinner is on you — we'll arrange the shuttle into beautiful Asciano for those who fancy a relaxed evening out at a local restaurant.

🍷 Wine tasting + aperitivo, included

🍽 Dinner: Not included — shuttle to Asciano arranged

    🧺 Picnic lunch included

  • A day completely off the schedule — and one of the highlights of the week. Pick your adventure:

    • Siena:We'll shuttle you to Asciano for the 30-minute train into one of Italy's most extraordinary medieval cities. Perfect for an afternoon of wandering, aperitivo on the Piazza del Campo, and dinner before the train back.

    • Ride to Pienza:A beautiful 70km tarmac loop through the Val d'Orcia to this UNESCO World Heritage hilltop town — or ride one way and get shuttled back with time for an afternoon in Siena.

    • Stay at basecamp:Pool, lavender, silence. Absolutely valid.

    🍽 Lunch/Dinner: Not included — Siena recommended!

  • We save one of Tuscany's most celebrated landscapes for last. A short shuttle (around an hour) positions us perfectly to explore the Chianti — a region of vine-draped hillsides, stone towers, and endless gravel tracks that have been producing extraordinary wine for centuries. It's a fitting final chapter to the week's riding.

Back at basecamp, an olive oil tasting leads into the week's closing dinner — a second four-course feast with local produce, celebrating the week and each other.

    🫒 Olive oil tasting, included

    🍽 Dinner: 4-course dinner, included

    🧺 Picnic lunch included

  • Arrivederci, Tuscany

    Check-out 10am

Pack your bikes, soak up one last sunrise over the lavender fields, and bid farewell to your temporary Tuscan home. We'll shuttle you to Siena (drop-off 11:30am) and continue to Florence Airport (approx. 1pm). Please allow at least 3 hours for return flights.

Accomodation & Food

Basecamp

Your home for the week is a stunning agriturismo set 30km south of Siena, in the very heart of the Strade Bianche. Surrounded by lavender fields and ancient olive groves, this is a place that rewards arriving tired from the saddle.

Our hosts are a wonderful brother and sister who are passionate about cycling, Tuscan food, and keeping local traditions alive. Rooms are spread across private apartments and comfortable en-suite rooms — all on a twin-share basis, with the option to upgrade to a single room. There's a pool, extraordinary sunsets, and the kind of deep quiet that's increasingly hard to find.

Rooms available from 3pm on arrival. Late arrivals always welcome — just join us when you can. Check-out is 10am on departure day. Extra nights can be arranged directly with the property subject to availability.

Food

Food is central to this week, and we haven't cut corners. Alongside your cooking class dinner and the four-course feasts on Days 3 and 6, you'll wake each morning to a proper breakfast and head out with a picnic lunch on every riding day.

On two evenings, dinner is yours to enjoy independently — a great opportunity to explore the local restaurants of Asciano or Siena, both worth the trip on their own merits. We'll arrange the shuttle and, where helpful, a recommendation or two.

Dietary requirements? Let us know at booking and we'll do our best to accommodate. Gluten-free pizza is available on arrival night.

About The Riding

With two route options each day, a longer and shorter route, we have given this trip a range of 3/5 (shorter route) to 4/5 (longer routes) for challenge level.

Riding the Strade Biache gravel roads

Challenge Level

Terrain

Around 50% gravel, 50% tarmac. The famous Strade Bianche — wide, compacted gravel roads — form the backbone of most routes. Linking sections include occasional singletrack, rougher farm tracks, and short tarmac stretches. After heavy rain, some sections may be rerouted or require brief walks — all part of the adventure.

Climbing

Tuscany is famously rolling rather than mountainous — there are few big climbs, but the terrain is relentlessly undulating. Expect elevation gains of 700–1000m on shorter routes and 1200–1500m on longer routes. Most gradients are manageable, though there will be some sharp, short ascents and descents. Confident off-road descending is recommended.

Daily Distances

Shorter routes: 40–50km per day.
Longer routes: 60–80km per day.

The support van is always available to hop in at set regroup points — so you're never committed to a distance you're not feeling.

Remoteness & Weather

We pass through villages and towns most days, and the support vehicle can reach the majority of the route. We run these camps in early and late summer — warm, sunny days, without the intense heat or storms of peak season. Always pack a rain layer just in case.

More than just the riding…

Tuscany has always been as much about the table as the road. We've woven a set of carefully chosen experiences through the week that go well beyond the saddle.

  • Wine tasting in Tuscany

    Wine Tasting

Local Chianti and Brunello country — tasted properly, with the people who make it.

  • Olive groves in Tuscany

    Olive Oil Tasting

Learn to taste and appreciate the liquid gold produced in the groves around our basecamp.

  • Aperitivo Hour Tuscany

    Aperitivo Hour

The Italian art of the early evening drink. Celebrated twice — because once is never enough.

  • Making pasta in Italy

    Cooking Class

A proper, hands-on lesson in Tuscan cooking. Then you eat what you made. Need we say more?

Support Style

Fully Supported, Entirely Flexible

This is a supported camp designed to let you ride your way. Whether you prefer a guided group, solo navigation, or something in between — it all works.

Guiding

There will be two ride options each day, with SITW guides out on each of the route options.   Each evening, we’ll talk over the routes for the next day, and set start times for those who want to ride with a guide/group.   If you choose to ride with a guided group, we'll be riding at a pace that suits that whole group.  We’ll have a whatsapp set up for regrouping at scenic picnic stops, cafes and sights along the way.

All riders should equipped with their own navigation, and navigation devices are available to loan from us, and  we’ll share a a specially curated collection of routes and route briefings via Komoot, to enable navigation and planning your days.

Support

This Gravel Camp is fully supported, with at least one SITW bike guide per 8 riders, and a support van capable of carrying bikes and riders.   Riders will be provided with a specially curated route collection, and are free to ride each day’s routes at their own pace or with the guided group. Or a mix of the two! Our gravel camps are all set up to enable all riders to ride their way.  We’ll share recommended regroup spot, our favourite cafes and sights along the way,

Bikes & Bike Hire

Bike hire is not included as standard — riders are welcome to bring their own bike or hire locally through us.

Classic Bianchi bikes hanging on wall

Recommended Bike

A gravel bike with a minimum of 38mm tyres and a good gearing ratio is ideal for this trip. If you're newer to off-road riding, a hardtail mountain bike is great for building confidence on the rougher sections (though slightly slower on tarmac). Bring your bike in safe working order — we'll share a recommended spares and tools list ahead of the trip.

Bike Hire

We can arrange local bike hire–either a gravel bike or hardtail mountain bike. Simply add this as an add-on in your WeTrvael portal and we'll pass your details on to our trusted local provider.

FAQs

  • We run one group pick-up from Florence Airport at 1:30pm and collect from Siena Train Station at approximately 2:45–3pm on the way through. This is a set group departure — please plan to meet these times.

If you can't make the pick-up, here are your options:

    • Train to Asciano: Trains run from both Florence Airport (via Florence Santa Maria Novella) and Pisa Airport (with a change at Empoli). The station is "Asciano-Monte Oliveto Maggiore" and we can arrange a pick-up from there — just let us know.

    • Florence to Pisa Airport: Trains run regularly between Florence Santa Maria Novella and Pisa Centrale (approx. 1hr). The Pisa Mover connects the airport to the station.

    • Car hire: Often surprisingly affordable from both airports and, honestly, about the same price as public transport once you factor in connections — and far less faff. A great option if the pick-up times don't work.

  • Yes — we have space in the support van for bike bags. Please let us know at the time of booking (there's a field in the order form) so we can plan accordingly.

  • Our Tuscany Gravel Camp has room for up to 17 riders

  • We will try our best to accommodate dietary restrictions for meals that we prepare. If you have serious allergies, please email us before booking on hello@sistersinthewild.com.

  • You should be comfortable riding 40–50km in hilly terrain for several days in a row, and confident handling a bike on loose gravel descents. The shorter routes are rated 3/5 — achievable for a fit recreational rider who rides regularly. The longer routes (4/5) are more demanding — big climbing days requiring solid fitness and off-road bike handling skill.

The support van means you're never committed to completing every kilometre. Drop us an email if you're unsure whether this trip is right for you: hello@sistersinthewild.com

  • Check-in is from 3pm on arrival day; check-out is 10am on departure day. No worries at all if you're arriving late — just join us whenever you get there.

If you'd like to book extra nights before or after the camp, you're welcome to do so directly with the property, subject to availability. We'll share the details once your booking is confirmed.

  • We run the Tuscany Gravel Camp in early and late summer, aiming for warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine while avoiding the intense heat and thunderstorms of peak July and August.
